Preventing MRSA Infection

Lately, there has been an increase in news stories about something called MRSA (pronounced “mersa”) that is said to be a potentially life threatening skin infection.

In the past, hospital patients (especially older patients or young children) whose immunity may have been weakened would acquire staph infections during their hospital stays. These infections were caused by a bacteria known as staphylococcus aureus (SA) and would be treated typically with a penicillin-type antibiotic called methicillin.

The majority of MRSA infections (85%) still occur in hospital or health care settings (3). Starting in the early 1990s, however, a new strain of SA began to emerge in school students, day care centers, and athletes. Depending on the severity of misalignment and the number of teeth involved, there are several options available for correcting crooked teeth.

If there are only a few teeth involved, sometimes tooth-colored bonding (composite) is a good way to go. Of course, this method does not actually move the teeth; it simply makes them appear straight cosmetically. It involves minimal tooth preparation, which allows your natural tooth structure to be somewhat preserved.

The doctor may need to shave the tooth slightly just to facilitate the adherence of the dental materials. The remainder of the procedure typically involves a 2- or 3-step process. First, an etchant (usually phosphoric acid) is applied to the tooth. This creates microscopic finger-like projections into the tooth structure, giving the adhesive something to grab on to. The second step is to apply the adhesive. This is a crucial step as it allows the composite material to adhere to the tooth. These materials are typically cured with an ultraviolet light, which makes the procedure less time consuming. Usually, the doctor and assistant will wear orange glasses or use an orange shield to protect their eyes from the ultraviolet light. The debate about truth has been going on for ages. Philosophers and great thinkers from all walks of life have searched for truth. Some never find it while others are blessed to know and embrace truth. In fact, just before His crucifixion, Jesus said to Pilate “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice”. Then Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find in him no fault at all” (John 18:37b-8).

When Pilate said that he found no fault in Jesus, that was a true statement. But if you link that statement back to what Jesus had said just seconds before, it becomes apparent that Pilate believed Jesus was speaking the truth. Realm of Empires: Facebook Strategy Game

Do you enjoy online games but don’t have much time to play? I have never really understood the fascination with games that take up so much of one’s time that they sit in front of the computer for hours on end. Typically, these are strategy games of one sort or another. I personally know a few people who sit in front of their computer monitors for hours at a time, day after day, absorbed and completely submerged in some enchanted, far-away world.

Recently, I discovered such a game that takes only a few minutes per day and is quite fun to play. The game is called Realm of Empires (RoE) and their website is located at http://www.realmofempires.com. RoE is a Facebook game where players start out with a small village and attempt to grow it into an empire. A Facebook account is required to play the game. The idea is to get your Facebook friends to participate and help you grow your empire by joining your clan, although anyone with a Facebook account may join your clan.

In Pontiac, Michigan one cannot help but notice the half dozen panhandlers who constantly work Saginaw Street. I have been going through some tough financial times myself lately, so I tend to have a little more compassion for them then usual. I wish I could help them, but it’s a difficult situation. For one thing, I don’t have a lot of money myself and to give it away to help them would only worsen my own situation. I don’t even have enough to meet my own needs; the bank is hounding me about car insurance, which I just don’t have the money for after paying my rent, car payment, and grocery bills. I would love to help them, but I am helpless to do anything. I feel bad about it, but the situation is currently beyond my control.

CNN promotes foreign cars

I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing today (5/10/09) on CNN! They aired a "news story" about these new incentives to trade in your older vehicle for a more fuel efficient one. They said that, if you traded a car that got 18 MPG for a new car that gets 21 MPG, you would qualify for for a certain amount in incentives. They also said that, the incentives would be higher depending on the vehicle being traded and the percentage of improvement in fuel economy in the new one. They explained that SUV owners would benefit more than others due to the increased percentage of improvement in fuel economy after trading their vehicles. Read More...

Swine Flu Panic Unnecessary

Influenza claimed between 10 and 20 million lives throughout the world during the 1918-1919 pandemic. The high death toll was caused mainly by secondary bacterial infections of pneumonia, against which there were no antibiotic defenses at the time. Although pneumonia, rather than the flu itself, is the more serious threat to the victim, antibiotics are available today to treat such complications.

The flu is transmitted through virus-laden moisture droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing. It can affect the respiratory tract anywhere from the nose and throat to the lungs. It is caused by a several viruses, usually classified as type A, B, or C and further divided into individual strains. The general population will usually take approximately ten years to develop immunity. The virus, however, will mutate and a new strain will emerge. This ability of the virus to mutate makes total immunization to the disease impossible.

Before we moved to our new house, I vaguely remember sitting on the floor in a big circle in kindergarten at Thomas Elementary School. My memories of first and second grade are almost nonexistent. If I had to pick my favorite, third grade would have to be it. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to do it twice. I remember singing along with Michael Jackson on the radio as he sang "ABC, it's easy as 123". (Of course, Michael was a little more innocent back then.) I could sing along with the radio for hours. I used to go upstairs and turn on our old radio and just keep turning through the dial until I found a song I liked and just sing along until I heard someone coming up the steps. Then I would stop singing because I was a little too shy to do it in front of other people, but boy did I love to sing.

Social Networking - Yuwie Versus Myspace

People all over the world are fascinated with this "Social Networking" thing - and why not? It's wonderful. I recently signed up on Facebook and was amazed to find many family members there, some of whom I had not been in contact with for quite a long time. I even discovered family members I didn't know about until I found them on Facebook. Now I'm addicted like everyone else.

This article, however, is not about Facebook. Rather, it is a comparison between Myspace and Yuwie.

The first social network I, personally, became aware of was Myspace. It was founded by Chris Dewolfe and Tom Anderson who were once members of Friendster. They hypothesized that they could compete with Friendster by providing a social network that offered less restrictions and more options for users. Thus, they founded the site in July, 2003, which is currently owned by Rupert Murdock who also owns 20th Century Fox and Fox Television.¹

I have been a member, on and off, for the past four or five years. When I first joined, I thought it was great! What a cool way to stay in touch! I did a search but didn’t really find any friends or family on the site. After a few years, they started popping up here and there and now several friends and family members are there.

One thing I did not like about Myspace was that it took a long time for the pages to load. It takes forever – especially if you have a really elaborate layout. Lately, it loads faster, but they still have a few problems. One problem is that everything seems to line up to the left of the column. I have tried everything I know, but I can’t get anything centered. Another problem is there RSS feed application. Again, I tried everything I know how to do and I just could not get the thing to work. I spent countless hours trying to get it to function – hours of wasted time.

This is one reason why I tend to shy away from Myspace when I want to do something online. It’s just too difficult to get the results I want and the pages load so slowly, too much time gets wasted. So I usually go to another site first.

Another social networking site I like a lot is Yuwie. They are very similar to Myspace. They have many of the same types of modules, a friends list, a comments area, pictures, video, etc. Their user interface is easier than Myspace. Adding the very same RSS feed in Yuwie only took a minute or two compared to struggling for hours trying to do the same task on Myspace. In fact, you might just be reading this article from my Yuwie page as a result of the user friendly interface that allowed me to add the feed.

Additionally, I recently changed my e-mail address, so I needed to change the information in each of my accounts. I am a member of many websites and changing my e-mail address at each of them was relatively easy, except of course for Myspace. If you have ever changed your e-mail address, you will notice that Myspace sends a verification e-mail to your former address. What the folks there do not realize is, when a person changes their e-mail address, they may (as it was in my case) no longer have access to the former address. It is, therefore, impossible to retrieve their verification e-mail, which means there is no way to change the account information. The only way to correct this problem is to completely delete your account and start all over again – another huge waste of time.

If you happen to have accounts at both sites and would like to share your Yuwie page with your Myspace friends, good luck. Myspace filters all links to Yuwie. They accuse them of spamming, phishing, spreading viruses, spyware, malware, and adware (see below). These are outright lies. I’ve been a member of Yuwie since October, 2007 and I have never had any experience with any type of virus or malicious software. They have a few annoying ads that pop up once in a while, but nothing like the serious accusations Myspace claims.

Yuwie says they pay you for using their site. You may never get rich from them, but I am not so concerned about getting paid. It’s just nice to have found a social network site that isn’t so difficult to use. Don’t get me wrong. I still enjoy Myspace, but I prefer Yuwie. I only wish Yuwie was a little more popular.
